WYOMING JR/CADET NATIONAL WRESTLING TEAM
FARGO, ND 2011

HERE IS A LITTLE INFO ON WHAT THE NATIONAL TEAM THAT GOES TO FARGO, ND IS ALL ABOUT

What is Fargo?

Fargo is a National level wrestling tournament wrestled over 8 days for both Cadets (15-16) and Jr’s (17-through hs seniors) in the styles of Greco and Freestyle wrestling. This tournament is held in the middle of July in Fargo, ND. The dates this year are from 15th -23rd. This tournament has some of the best wrestlers in the country under the same roof or dome. This tournament is proclaimed to be the biggest and toughest wrestling tournament in the country. Last year for example there were over 2000 wrestlers in the Jr freestyle tournament alone. We also wrestle on 23 mats and there probably is enough room in the dome for about 30 mats if you take out all the room to walk around and place the mats edge to edge.

Why should I attend?

You should attend/compete in this tournament if you want to become a better wrestler. Remember more mat time is a good thing. The best wrestlers in the country pretty much wrestle year round anymore. Plus we have said it several times that summer wrestling makes winter champs. Another reason to attend/compete is that this tournament is one of the most highly recruited wrestling tournaments of the year. So if you are looking to wrestle in college it is a must that you think hard about being on this team. This tournament is covered by all college wrestling divisions from D-1 to Juco. There have been several times on occasion the last couple of years that us Wyoming coaches have been standing around talking and a college recruiter has asked about one of our wrestlers.

How do I become part of this team?

On March 25th, 26th at the Casper Events Complex there will be a Jr Greco/Freestyle state championship tournament. This so happens to be the same weekend as the Kids/Cadets state folkstyle championships. This tournament is the pre-qualifier to be on the national team. It is highly recommended that you wrestle at this tournament, but not required. It is easier for all involved if you wrestle at the tournament for several reasons. 1. You need a USA card which you can purchase at the tournament when you register. 2. Have the opportunity to fill out a wrestler committal form which contains info that we need to help get an accurate count on wrestlers and uniform orders. 3. If you wish you can start raising the money right away instead of waiting around wasting some of the summer. A thing to remember we are only allowed to take 4 wrestlers per weight class unless one of those 4 is a regional qualifier, which means you have won one of the regional tournaments such as, Northwest, Central, Southeast, Southern Plains, or Northeast. So the wrestlers that wrestled at Jr state will have first choice as to what weight they want to wrestle at when at Fargo.

How much does it cost to be part of the team?

Fee for this team will probably be around $800. This will cover all costs for the trip except for some snack food and souvenirs from the wrestling boutiques. We will give the wrestlers raffle tickets to sell to raise all the money required to pay the $800. If a wrestler would like additional tickets above the required number to have a little extra spending money we have no problem with that. I would say that $300 would be more than adequate spending money for the two weeks.

Team Camp When and Where?

There will be a weeklong camp the week before we head to Fargo, ND and most likely the camp will be held at Kelly Walsh High School. Practices can by anywhere from 1 ½ hrs to 3hrs twice a day depending on effort. We are hoping to have a couple of coaches from the UW wrestling staff this year to help out with camp, plus various college wrestlers to help out as well. While in Casper the wrestlers will be placed with host families for the week. One thing that we as a coaching staff can’t stress enough is if you decide to be part of this wonderful wrestling experience to come to camp in GOOD SHAPE we don’t have a lot of time to work on getting you guys/gals back into wrestling shape if you don’t you will pay severely.

We hope to see many new faces and a lot of the old faces from previous years competing this year as Team Wyoming and improve on the success from last year.

One thing I forgot to mention is that cadets qualifier tournament for the national team will be at Kids/Cadets state the first weekend in May which is the 6,7,8.

Sheridan Head Coach Scott Cleland and Assistant Coach Kevin Kessner will be in attendance July 9th & 10th at the Fargo Camp in Casper.

Sheridan is bringing:

Trevor Goss Juniors
Clay Carter Juniors
Collin Cundy Cadets

Carson Reimers is still recovering from the Longboard accident...

What do the numbers look like? are we up or down from last year?

We are around the same number of total kids I think last year we had 46 wrestlers plus two female wrestlers. This year we have 41 wrestlers plus three female wrestlers. Except for our numbers are reversed 27 juniors and around 14 cadets I think. Where last year we had 26 cadets and 19 juniors.

As far as cadets numbers we are done but up as juniors.

Really excited to have Coach Cleland and Coach Kessner be apart of this years camp hopefully we can get them for the years to come and even go on the trip with us as coaches.

Also going to have Cort Peterson come up and Coach Bath from Douglas might make a couple of trips up to help as well.

Also attending camp will be Tyler Cox, Andy McCulley, and Jared Hatley. Cox and Hatley will be coaches at fargo as well.
