What will Wrestling look like with 4 classes?

Postby eclark » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:56 pm

The newest reclassification proposal working through the WHSAA process is to move from 3 classes in wrestling to 4.

Taking wrestling from 3 classes to 4....... I wondered what it would do to the numbers on the Brackets for the State Tourney. Here are the facts! I took the information from this years regional entries and plugged them into the new system. You make your own call.

5A (The Largest 10 schools) would fill a 16 man Bracket in 5 weights. The full weights would be 113,126,132,138,& 145. The smallest weight would be 170 with 11 wrestlers.
4A (The Next 9 schools) would fill 1, 16 man bracket. It would be 138. 195 would have 8 wrestlers & 285 would have 10.
3A (The next 12 schools) would fill 1 weight and that would be 138. 285 would have 7 wrestlers, 113 & 195 would have 9 wrestlers, 152 & 170 would have 11.
2A/1A (All Remaining Schools) Would actually fill 4 weights (126,132,138, 145) as they have a lot more schools to draw from and you can enter 2 kids per weight. And Actually would have the largest weight class @ 132 with 20 entries. But, the numbers are not good still. They would have 8 wrestlers @ 195, 9 @ 285 & 170, 10 @ 113, & 11 @ 120.

I also find it interesting that the middle weights are the fullest and we took weights out of that area and added up top where the numbers are the thinnest. I am going to pass this along my AD. I will give hard numbers to all of the wrestling coaches at the State tourney meeting.

The 5 classes are set up on hard numbers. Enrollment from 800 & up are 5A. 799-400 are 4A, etc.... . What do you think??????

Changing from a 3 class system to 4 classes would be ridiculous! That is moving in the opposite direction of where our state needs to be going. 4 classes would water down the competition and cheapen a state title. If we really want to see how the best of our state stack up we should be moving to a 2 class system instead of a 4 class system.

How about this idea Eddie, The coaches from Wright have drawn up a proposal to do away with the outdated regional tournaments. In their place would be a classification state tournament, this state tournament would place 8 kids, these 8 kids then would qualify for an all class state tournament in Casper as always.

There would be no extension to the season, and the wasted weekend of regionals would become a great weekend of wrestling as it would be a culminating state event.

The 8 kids from each class would make for full 24 man brackets instead of 3 classifications of empty 16 man brackets.

I don't fully understand what you are talking about and how it would work. I would like to look at it.
D1 really! Grow up a bit. Just putting information out there for everyone to look at..... make your own decisions on the facts.

Simple, everyone qualifies for state, 2 kids per weight per school as if was a regional. Instead of having two empty regional meets that are a budget breaking waste of time, you would have a single meet in which would count as that classifications state culminating event. This way all kids would get the opportunity to compete at state, and you would get to place 2 extra kids per weight class. You crown the classifications state champ as always and the team champions as always.

The top 8 in each classification state culminating event then would advance to a real state tournament. Full 24 man brackets. Held in Casper same weekend as always.

No extension to the season

I like the format wrestling fan suggests. End result one state champ and even distribution.

Man I hate the when the jealousy thing shines thru! Every one wishes they had the #s SV has, some just won't admit it though.

The reclass up one more is just foolish.

eclark,

Do you see any improvement to these numbers with the construction of new schools in Gillette and Casper? Just curious to how people feel the addition of these schools will help or hurt wrestling in Wyoming?

NO MORE CLASSES! We need to shrink to at least two classifications. The simple thought of four makes me wanna puke. I like wrestling fan's idea. Take out the regional tourney and hold the single class tourneys... followed by a REAL state tournament in Casper the following weekend. Sign me up for that!
